Queen Hatshepsut Temple:

The Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, also known as Deir el-Bahari is one of Egypt’s most significant architectural achievements. This is a mortuary temple dedicated to the sun god Amun.

Hatshepsut, one of the few female pharaohs, established the temple, including terraces, colonnades, and ramps that combine harmoniously with the natural cliffs. Its reliefs and statues honor her reign and divine birth, presenting her legacy as a powerful and successful ruler.

The Valley of the Kings:

On the west bank of the Nile, across from modern Luxor and carved into the Theban Hills, lies the Valley of the Kings, chosen as the royal burial ground for most of Egypt’s New Kingdom rulers. This small valley, surrounded by steep cliffs, was easy to guard and protect.

The valley was carved into limestone bedrock, shaped over millions of years by torrential rains, providing solid ground for the tombs. It contains 64 numbered royal and private tombs, ranging from small pit graves to vast labyrinths with over 120 corridors and chambers.

Colossi of Memnon:

The Colossi of Memnon are two large stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III near Luxor. Their tall reaches about 18 meters, and they originally guarded the entrance to Amenhotep’s mortuary temple, which was one of the largest in Egypt, but it became ruins now.

The Colossi become iconic symbols which are distinctive for their grandeur and for the mysterious “singing” sound one of them reportedly emitted in ancient times, likely due to temperature changes causing cracks in the stone.

Dendera Temple:

The temple complex at Dendera is quite large, featuring a basilica, two birth houses, a sacred lake, three sanctuaries, and numerous other temples and shrines within its walls.

Structures at the site hail from an assortment of different ancient Egyptian eras, with monuments from the Middle Kingdom, the Ptolemaic Era, and the period of Roman provincial rule.

Abydos Temple:

Abydos was the head of the God Osiris- the God of the Underworld and part of his body was buried there according to the legend of ancient Egyptians, in Abydos.

King Seti I was the founder of Abydos Temple constructed another temple for himself, which was completed by his son, King Ramses II. The beauty of this Temple almost feels like an apology and dedication to the following gods: Osiris, Isis, Horus, Amun Ra, Mut, and Khonsu.

After lunch, your guide will drive you back to your hotel in Luxor.

Valley of the Queens:

Valley of the Queens is a site on the west bank of the Nile where Queens and Princesses were buried during the New Kingdom period. It includes around 90 tombs, with the most famous being the amazingly decorated tomb of Queen Nefertari, the wife of Ramses II.

The tombs in this valley are ornamented with exquisite paintings and inscriptions that show the queens’ roles in both the royal family and religious ceremonies, marking their importance in Egyptian society.

Habu Temple:

The Medinet Habu Temple on the west bank of Luxor is the mortuary temple of Pharaoh Ramses III. This large and well-preserved complex is well-known for its detailed reliefs and inscriptions that document the king’s military victories, particularly against the Sea Peoples.

The temple’s architecture includes massive pylons, courtyards, and sanctuaries, all complicatedly decorated. Medinet Habu gives unique insights into the art, religion, and politics of the New Kingdom.

Deir El Medina:

Deir El-Medina was a village inhabited by the workers who erected the tombs in the Valley of the Kings. This well-preserved settlement provides a clear glance into the daily lives of ancient Egyptian artisans and laborers.

The village contains houses, tombs, and a small temple, all awfully decorated with art and inscriptions. Engravings recorded the villagers’ letters, legal disputes, and religious texts, providing a wealth of information about their social and economic conditions.

The Ramesseum Temple:

The Ramesseum is the mortuary temple of Pharaoh Ramses II on the west bank of the Nile near Luxor. This marvelous temple complex was dedicated to the god Amun and Ramses II himself. It includes wonderful pylons, statues, and reliefs depicting the king’s military exploits, including the famous Battle of Kadesh.

Although much of the temple is in ruins, the colossal seated statue of Ramses II and the beautifully ornamented hypostyle hall remain as symbols of the grandeur of his reign.

Luxor Temple was “the place of the First Occasion,” where the god Amon experienced rebirth during the pharaoh’s annually reenacted coronation ceremony. Today, the remains of this vast complex include the colossal Great Colonnade Hall, almost 61 meters long, with very high columns, whose decoration was largely undertaken by Tutankhamun.
