The majestic Abu Simbel Temple is a breathtaking legacy of Pharaoh Ramesses the Great (1279–1213 BC), located about 230 kilometers southwest of Aswan in Nubia.
Carved into the mountainside and completed in 1264 BC, the twin temples were built to celebrate Ramesses II’s military triumphs, most notably the Battle of Kadesh.
The larger temple is fronted by four colossal statues of the pharaoh, while the smaller temple is dedicated to his beloved queen, Nefertari.
