Wadi El Natrun:

Wadi El Natrun is a desert depression northwest of Cairo known for its natural deposits of natron salt and its important place in early Christian monastic history. In Christian tradition, the area became known as Scetis or the Wilderness of Shehit and attracted monks seeking prayer, solitude, and spiritual life.

Monastic communities began developing here during the fourth century under Saint Macarius the Great and other early Desert Fathers. Although many monasteries once existed throughout the region, four historic monasteries remain active today.

Monastery of Baramus:

Visit the Monastery of Baramus, also known as the Monastery of the Romans, one of the four surviving monasteries of Wadi El Natrun. Its name is traditionally associated with the Roman saints Maximus and Domatius, who lived a monastic life in the region.

Explore the monastery’s churches, courtyards, defensive walls, and religious spaces while learning about its connection to the earliest monastic communities of the Western Desert.

Monastery of Saint Bishoy:

Continue to the Monastery of Saint Bishoy, founded during the fourth century and named after one of the most respected fathers of Coptic monasticism. The monastery developed around the community established by Saint Bishoy and remains an active center of worship and monastic life.

According to Coptic tradition, the monastery preserves the relics of Saint Bishoy. Its complex includes several churches, with the main church dedicated to the saint.

Monastery of Saint Macarius:

Visit the Monastery of Saint Macarius the Great, also known as Deir Abu Maqar. Its monastic community was founded during the fourth century and became one of the most influential centers of Coptic monasticism in Egypt.

The monastery expanded and was restored at different periods throughout its long history. Today, it remains an important religious community with historic churches, monastic buildings, and a rich spiritual heritage.

El Suryan Monastery:

Conclude your monastery visits at El Suryan Monastery, also known as the Monastery of the Syrians. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it became associated with Syrian monks who settled there, giving the monastery its present name.

Discover its historic churches and religious artwork, including the Church of the Virgin Mary and the Church of the Cave, while learning about the monastery’s distinctive Coptic and Syriac heritage.
