Day 3: Embark on Best Sightseeing of Aswan

Philae Temple:

Philae Temple on Agilkia Island is one of the most astonishing symbols of ancient Egyptian architecture. This astonishing temple was originally dedicated to the goddess Isis.

Philae Temple Complex shows intricate carvings and well-preserved reliefs. The temple was transported from its original site on Philae Island to prevent submersion due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

The temple's transportation was a significant achievement in archaeological preservation, which reflects the rich cultural heritage of Egypt.

 

The Unfinished Obelisk:

Unfinished Obelisk in the northern region of the granite quarries of Aswan is an extraordinary example of ancient engineering. The legendary queen of Hatshepsut commissioned this obelisk, and it would have been the biggest obelisk ever carved on earth before the project was suddenly stopped due to the development of cracks in the granite.

Today, the Unfinished Obelisk provides insight into the techniques used by ancient engineers and workers and the challenges they faced.

 

The High Dam:

Aswan High Dam which was completed in 1970 is a monumental engineering feat on the Nile River in southern Egypt. This dam came into existence to control flooding, store water for irrigation, and generate hydroelectric power.

The dam has had a profound impact on the economy and agriculture of Egypt. However, its construction also led to the relocation of several communities and significant environmental changes, including the relocation of ancient monuments such as the Philae Temple.

Edfu Temple in southern Egypt is one of the best-preserved temples, which is dedicated to the falcon god Horus, and it was constructed during the Ptolemaic period between 237 and 57 BC.

Its grandeur is exemplified by the massive pylons, complicatedly decorated halls, and detailed reliefs depicting the mythological battle between Horus and Seth. Highlights of the temple include the magnificent Great Hypostyle Hall with its 134 large columns, the Sacred Lake, and several massive obelisks and statues. Karnak's sheer scale and architectural splendor make it a must-visit site for anyone interested in the rich history of ancient Egypt.

 

Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut:

Temple of Hatshepsut is a superb example of ancient Egyptian architecture, which was built during the 18th dynasty by the order of Queen Hatshepsut.

Temple of Deir El Bahari, which was designed by the queen’s architect Senenmut, is famous for its terraced structure, harmonious integration with the surrounding cliffs, and intricate reliefs reflecting Hatshepsut's divine birth and trading expeditions.

 

Valley of the Kings:

Valley of the Kings on the west bank of the Nile is a rock-cut gravesite for pharaohs and powerful nobles of the New Kingdom (16th to 11th century BC). This site is famous for its 63 precious tombs, including the famed tomb of Tutankhamun.

Colossi of Memnon are two massive stone sculptures of Pharaoh Amenhotep III on the west bank of the Nile near Luxor. Each statue towers in a height of 18 meters and represents the seated pharaoh to guard the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III, and they are all that remains of what was once a vast and grand temple complex.

Citadel of Qaitbey is a 15th-century fortress established by Sultan Al-Ashraf Sayf al-Din Qaitbay. This marvelous castle was founded on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria, and it served as a strategic defense against Ottoman invasions.

The robust structure shows thick walls, corner towers, and a central mosque of Mamluk military architecture. Today, Qaitbay Citadel is an important historical landmark providing glances into Egypt's medieval past and showing panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea.

 

Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa:

The tombs of Kom El-Shoqafa are a historical and archaeological site in Alexandria, dating back to the 2nd century. This magical site has a significant importance, which displays the impacts of religion in Ancient Egypt.

 

Pompey's Pillar:

Pompey's Pillar is a towering Roman column about 26 meters tall. This column was erected in 297 AD to commemorate the Roman Emperor Diocletian, who is believed to have quelled a rebellion in the city.

The granite column, which was mistakenly named after the Roman general pompeys, is one of the most massive ancient monoliths and the only remaining significant monument from the Serapeum of Alexandria, a temple complex dedicated to the Greco-Egyptian god Serapis.
